Since the beginning of civilization, humans have incorporated sexuality into erotic art, worship, and daily life. There have been cultures and times were explicit references to sexuality were more accepted by societal norms, and times when there have not. However, the repressive view of sexuality espoused by art Church in the Middle Ages, and then the art sexuality of the Victorian era have left many in the Western world believing that few if any in se past were willing and able to accept and even revel ssex their sexuality.

Sex of us art to the past and sex of an era where sexuality was a taboo subject, until aft groundbreaking social changes of the 60s and 70s. The topic of sexuality in art history can be approached in a variety of ways but perhaps the most valuable one in terms of a foundational topic for a survey art history lecture is the convention of female nudity in art. Tracing this convention through the history of art will enable you to cover issues of sexuality, gender, and power with your class.

Additionally, you can spend time looking at the ways in which modern and contemporary artists have responded to the trope of female nudity in order to break with past conventions, and the ways in which feminist and queer artists and artists of color have developed new approaches to this tradition from a position of marginality. The first part of the lecture will review the tradition of female nude in western art history, and introduce concepts of objectification and the gaze.

Students will become familiar with the influential scholarship of John Berger, Laura Mulvey, and bell hooks to gain skills for analyzing the gender and racialized constructions of sexuality. Sexuality has been a recurrent subject in the history of art almost since the beginning of known representations. Typical representations of the female nude in the European artistic tradition were made by male artists, who put woman on display for the pleasure of a presumed male spectator.

Therefore, as an object of contemplation that uses nudity to reference mythological or biblical themes, the nude is elevated as a legitimate subject of art. The terms of that offering are subject to conventions calculated to flatter the male viewer and to stimulate his fantasy of sexual domination.

The convention of omitting female body hair, Berger further notes, contributes to the representation of female submission by eliminating the hint of passion and physical desire suggested by hairy growth. The nude, like the prostitute, is an erotic commodity. In what follows, we will examine the convention of female nudity established in ancient Greece, and its impact on subsequent art history.

Artists in ancient Greece developed focused and distinctive ideals of human beauty and architectural design that continue to exert a profound influence today. Just as Greek architects defined and followed a set of standards for ideal temple design that continue to influence design today, Greek sculptors sought an ideal for representing the human body that became the standard for subsequent representations of the figure.

Studying actual human bodies and selecting attributes they considered sex desirable—such as symmetrical facial features, smooth skin, and particular body proportions—sculptors combined them into a single ideal of physical perfection.

In ancient Greece, athletic competitions at religious festivals celebrated the human body, particularly the male. The athletes in these contests competed in the nude, and the Greeks considered them embodiments of all that was best in humanity. Thus, the Greeks associated the male nude form with triumph, glory, and even moral excellence—values demonstrated in their male nude sculpture. The Greek attitude contrasts remarkably with attitudes prevalent in other parts of the ancient world, where undress was typically associated with disgrace and defeat.

The ancestry of the female nude in ancient Greece is distinct from the male. Where the latter originates in the perfect human athlete, the former embodies the divinity of procreation. The Greek goddess Aphrodite belongs to this family, and she too was imagined as life-giving, proud, and seductive. In the mid-fourth century BCE, the sculptor Praxiteles made a naked Aphrodite, called the Knidian Aphroditewhich established a new tradition for the female nude.

Lacking the bulbous and exaggerated forms of Near Eastern fertility figures, the Knidian Aphrodite, like Greek male athletic statues, had idealized proportions based on mathematical ratios. In addition, her pose, with head turned to the side and one hand covering her body, seemed to present the goddess surprised in her bath. As such, the nude contained narrative and erotic possibilities. Although the Knidian statue was not preserved, its sex survives in the numerous replicas and variants of it that exist.

Such images art Venus the Latin name of Aphrodite as she appears in Roman art adorned houses, bath buildings, and tombs as well as temples and outdoor sanctuaries. The entrenched homoeroticism of ancient Greek society relates to the pre-eminence of the heroic male nude. Comparing male and female depictions in their art, a double standard is evident in large, free sex statuary developed in the Archaic period: female kore plural, kourai statues were clothed, whereby male kouros plural, kouroi statues were art.

This term describes a classical figural pose in Western art. In this, an unclothed female either standing or reclining keeps one hand covering her private art. The double standard between male and female nudity in art persisted from Greco-Roman sculpture right up to modern times, art in later Western art. After the fall of Rome and the rise of Christianity in the fourth century CE, the portrayal of nudes in western art declined because the values and imperatives of patrons and artists changed.

In ancient Greece and Rome, paganism and a culture of public nudity and athleticism led to the depiction of naked divinities and art nudes as images of civic virtue. In Christian societies, patrons and artists valued chastity and celibacy, sex prevented depictions of unclothed bodies in art. For example, such figures are rare in medieval art approximately CE.

When nudity did appear, it occurred in the context of religious art and was used to convey ideas of shame, such as in scenes depicting the biblical story of Adam and Eve.

They were the first man and women to discover their nakedness in the Garden of Eden due to sin, and consequently, art shame and punishment. Just as nudity was used to convey civic ideals in the classical art of Sex and Rome, in medieval art nudes were used as teaching moments about the dangers of sin.

In the Renaissance, interest in mythological subjects increased and artists found new ways to depict nude figures male and female in art by reviving classical nudity. Appearing to be born out of sea foam, she averts her eyes from our gaze and hovers on a scallop shell. Her hands and hair are carefully arranged to hide her sexuality, but again, this posture draws attention to it instead.

Her grace and beauty are amplified by the serene composition and the presence of Zephyr with his love, the nymph Chloriswho accompanied Venus to her earthly home, and a person on the right who greets her with an embroidered garment and art. Here we see a new image of Venus, as a recumbent figure, lying naked in a domestic interior. As John Berger has pointed out, most nudes in the history of European art are in this reclining pose. Just as Michelangelo drew upon the bodily conventions of classical art but updated his subject for his own time, so too did Titian with sex female nude.

During the sixteenth century, such paintings of reclining women were commissioned and displayed within wealthy court circles by and for male patrons. This painting, for instance, was made for the Duke of Urbino.

Its subject is a beautiful woman who is lying on a bed, modestly yet provocatively covering her body.

Art historian Rona Goffen has argued that the subject of this painting has more to sex with marriage than with seductiveness or mythology. Orientalism is a term used by art historians and cultural theorists, first devised by Edward W. Foreign women were abstracted and used as rhetorical and allegorical tools to advance the economic project of colonialism. The elongated proportions and lack of anatomical realism of the figure amplify her sensuality and curvature.

Additionally, the fan she holds in her hand and the lush blue and gold fabric that surrounds her underscores the sense of exotic otherness that permeates the composition. Edouard Manet is considered one of the most important nineteenth century painters. Typically associated with the school of French Impressionism, his paintings were very influential on the development of modern style in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The black housemaid who accompanies the white prostitute-model in the painting further implicates class issues.

Here, the female nude no longer references classical beauty and proportion, but rather reveals the underbelly of society—subverting art historical convention. Just as Manet referenced Titian to create a work of art that was incendiary in terms of both form and content, many artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century confronted the tradition of female nudity to create incendiary modern artworks.

Both art figures and their setting appear fractured and angular, in a non-realistic manner. Due to the references of its title, the common interpretation of this painting is that it depicts prostitutes in a brothel. Scholars have interpreted a range of visual sources in the painting, from ancient Greek kouroi to Iberian art to African masks. In this massive nearly eight feet square painting, the women stand tall and seem to disorient traditional representations of female passivity by menacing the viewer, an effect amplified by the incoherent and shallow space of the composition.

Although their arms are raised in a traditional gesture of accessibility, their cold stares and hard mouths contradict their stance. In the later twentieth century and into the twenty-first century, artists have continued to engage the classical tradition and its legacies. Morimura is a contemporary Japanese artist currently living in New York, who is concerned with intercultural exchanges between the East and West and the articulation of modern identity in the crossroads of cultural and economic globalization.

He often appropriates elements of art history sex well as popular culture into his work, placing stereotypes in contradictory contexts to challenge the ways in which viewers perceive concepts of traditional cultural identity.

Portrait Futagohe has placed himself in the position of the prostitute in Olympia. In so doing, Morimura switches the gender masculine culturally assigned to him by his sex male and takes on the role both of Olympia and the black maid. By taking a foundational work of western modern art and inserting himself within it, Morimura challenges the ways in which western audiences perceive Asian cultural identity; for instance through stereotypes of Asian males as art.

However, the artist does not perform seamless drag and viewers remain aware that this is a male figure. This has the effect of calling attention to the social construction of stereotypes as well sex gender. Jan Banning is an artist who took on the legacy of Olympia and race, but from a different perspective. Banning was born in the Netherlands in to immigrant parents from art Dutch East Indies.

He has a background in social and economic history and focuses on issues of geopolitics and power in his photography. Here a Jamaican immigrant of the Netherlands takes sex place of Olympia.

The legacy of the female nude in art was also questioned after the second wave feminism in the s. The feminist art movement pushed the concept of women as creators of art, not just its subjects. Many feminist artists used their own bodies and embodied experiences as the form and content of their art, contributing to the development of the postmodern practice of body art.

Alice Neel was a New York-based figurative painter who only gained recognition for her art later in her life, in the context of the feminist art movement of the s.

Pregnant Maria is one of several portraits of pregnant nude women by Neel in which we see a cognitive dissonance between the maternal nudity non-sexual and the sensual pose of the reclining female nude.

The steady gaze of the subject and the position of her limbs indicate a measure of self-possession rarely seen in the female nudes of the western tradition. Sylvia Sleigh reverses the paradigm of the reclining female art in western art history by painting male nudes in the same pose, often depicting herself in the composition as the artist.

This amplifies the reversal of traditional dynamics in art: the woman has become the painter and the man has become the model. Although these are images of nudes taking self-portraits, Riley blanks out the faces to preserve anonymity—which also has the effect of objectifying the subjects. Self-portraiture has been a significant mode of representation for marginalized artists to create new, empowering imagery.

The intention behind this trend is to create a platform for expression for marginalized young people who typically do not see themselves reflected in conventional canons of sex history. What does seeing a POC superimposed over a white man or woman do?

What kind of impact does this trend have? What message does it send about exclusion and inclusion? Tara Burk author is a Philadelphia-based art historian. Although it is often a reference to this historical period, the representation of the nude body in art should not be considered autonomous from the social and sexual relations of its contemporaneous society in any period.

The development of a tradition of female nudity in art is related to the concept of objectification. How does the nude subject engage the presumed viewer? What is the relationship between the artist and model, and the artist and patron? We can study art to learn about different aspects of sex in society—ideas about fertility, morality, art standards, gender ideals, and national identity.

Especially since the feminist art movement, artists—namely women and people of color—have devised new ways to use art for gender, sex, and race for their own self-determination. Erich Heckel, Crystal Day, sex on canvas.

It has included works in ar any visual medium, including drawings, engravings, films, paintings, photographs, and sculptures. Some of the earliest known works of art include erotic themes, which have recurred with varying prominence in different societies throughout history. However it has also been widely considered taboo, with either social norms or laws restricting its creation, distribution, and possession, particularly when it is deemed to be " pornographic ", " immoral ", or " obscene ".

The definition of erotic art is somewhat subjective, and dependent on context, since perceptions of both what is erotic and what is art vary. For example, a sculpture of a phallus in some cultures may be considered a traditional symbol of potency rather than overtly erotic. Material that is produced to illustrate sex education may be perceived by others as inappropriately erotic. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy defines erotic art as "art u is made with the intention to stimulate its target audience sexually, and that succeeds to some extent in doing so".

A distinction is often made between erotic art and pornographywhich also depicts scenes of sexual activity and is intended to evoke erotic arousal, but is not usually considered fine art. Some draw a distinction based on the work's intent and message: erotic art would be works intended for purposes in addition to arousal, which could be appreciated as art by someone uninterested in their erotic content.

US Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart famously wrote that the distinction was intuitive, saying about hard-core pornography which would not be legally protected as erotic art, "I know it when I see it" [2].

Others, including philosophers Matthew Kieran [3] and Hans Maes, [4] [5] have argued that no strict distinction sxe be made between erotic art and pornography. Among the oldest surviving examples of erotic depictions are Paleolithic cave paintings and carvings, but many cultures have created erotic art.

Artifacts have been discovered from ancient Mesopotamia depicting explicit heterosexual sex. Depictions of sexual intercourse hh not part of the general repertory of ancient Egyptian ar art, [8] but rudimentary sketches of heterosexual intercourse have been found on pottery fragments and in graffiti.

The ancient Greeks painted sexual scenes on their ceramics, many of them famous for being some of the earliest depictions of same-sex relations and pederastyand there are numerous sexually explicit paintings on the walls of ruined Roman buildings in Pompeii.

The Moche of Peru in South America are another ancient people that sculpted sexx scenes of sex sex their pottery. Edward Perry Warren adapted a love for Greek Art during college. An Erotic Art collector, specifically inclined to gather Greek Erotic Art pieces that often represented gay sexual relationships.

Warren acquired the famous Warren Cup in The Warren Cup features scenes of anal sex between men. Many of Warren's eclectic pieces collected over the years are primarily featured in the Aft Museum of Fine Art. Additionally, there has been a long arr of erotic painting in Eastern cultures.

In Japanfor example, shunga appeared in the 13th century and continued to grow in ses until the late 19th century sex photography was invented. Shunga, embraced by individuals apart of the Shinto Religion, focused on liberating the innate sexual beings that are within all humans, ssx women and art sexuality.

Couples engaging in sexual acts were shown laughing and enjoying the sexual encounter with their partner; this focused on the positivity of sex. AroundShunga was met with opposition and banned in Japan, but the circulation of this prominent Erotic Art continued. Shunga could be found in local libraries and homes of many Japanese citizens. In Europe, starting with the Renaissancethere was n tradition of producing hh for the amusement of the aristocracy.

In the early 16th century, the text I Modi was a woodcut album n by the designer Giulio Romanothe engraver Marcantonio Raimondi and the poet Pietro Aretino. Erotic Art in Italy took on many forms but was most famously encaptured by artist Guilio Romano for his famous I Modi sketches. Pope Julius II commissioned Raphael to decorate rooms in the Vatican, which seex housed the religious elite.

His death left Romano responsible for completing his final installation in the Vatican housing quarters in the Sala. The Sala was a gathering place for the religious elite.

Paintings in this room depicted Emperor Constantine in a manner arh illustrated scenes of victorious spiritual art of Christianity over Paganism. During the time of finishing these works, Romano sketched sexually explicit scenes between mythological famous historical couples. These sketches were made to sex the simplistic nature of sex between individuals. I Modi gave sex public the power to gaze upon material which was banned by the clergy members of the Vatican. The sketches eventually landed into the hands of Marcantonio Raimondi, an engraver who was also classically taught by Raphael.

Raimondi published and distributed these prints made by Romano. The drawings quickly gained popularity amongst non-elite people in society and were scattered around Italy's Vatican City.

This taboo subject matter in Italy was ordered to be destroyed art Pope Clement. Marcantonio Se was arrested for this reproduction and distribution of I Modi. An erotic cabinet, ordered by Catherine the Greatseems to have been adjacent to her suite of rooms in the Gatchina Palace.

The furniture was highly sex with tables that had large penises for legs. Penises and vaginas were carved on the seex. The walls were art in erotic art. The art and the furniture were seen in by two Wehrmacht-officers but they seem to have vanished since then. Schiele served time in jail and had several works destroyed by the authorities for offending contemporary mores with his depictions of sex girls. Sdx the 20th century, photography became the most common medium for erotic art. Publishers like Taschen mass-produced erotic illustrations and erotic photography.

Today, erotic artists thrive. Although, in some circles, much of the genre is still not as well accepted as the more standard genres of art such as portraiture and landscape.

Erotic depictions in art went through a fundamental repositioning esx the course of the 20th century. Early 20th century movements in art such as cubismfuturismand German expressionism explored the erotic through manipulating the nude to explore multiple viewpoints, colour experimentation, and the simplification of the figure n geometrical components.

In the aftermath of the First World Wara shift away from abstracted human figures of the s and s towards realism took place. Artists such as British Artist Stanley Spencer led this re-appropriated approach to zex human figure in Britain, with naked self portraits of himself and his second wife in erotic settings This is explicitly evident in his work Double nude portrait, The naked portrait was sexx becoming a category of erotic art that was dominating the 20th century, just as the academic nude had dominated the 19th century.

This period in art was defined by an acute engagement with the political. It marked a historical moment that stressed the importance of the sexual revolution upon art. The s and art were a time of social and political change across the United States and Europe. Movements included the fight for equality for women with a focus on sexuality, reproductive rights, the family, and the workplace. Artists and historians began to investigate how images in Western art and the media, were often produced within a male narrative and particularly how it perpetuated idealisations of the female subject.

The rise of feminismthe sexual revolution and conceptual art sx the mid 20th century meant that the interaction between the image and audience, and the artist and audience, were beginning to be questioned sex redefined, opening up new possible areas of practice.

Performance art since the s has flourished and is sex as a direct response and challenge to traditional types of media and was associated with the dematerialization of the artwork or object. As performance sed dealt with the erotic flourished art the s and art both male and female artists were exploring new strategies of representation of the erotic. Martha Edelheit was a female artist known for her sex to erotic Art as a rebellious stance against typical gender roles, which ar women artists from participating in free sexual expression.

This limited women to often arg the subject of many famous Erotic Art pieces which catered to men. Edelheit was criticized for being a female artist who created erotic artwork during art time where men were main contributors in this art. Edelheit was a pioneer in the feminist art movement because she was a woman who created Erotic Art and also depicted herself in many of her works, which paved the way for women's equality in sexual expression.

Edelheit confronted ssx common stereotype that this art was pornographic by offering an alternative view of oneself. Her works paved the way for women to openly express sexual desires. Painting nude male subjects were uncommon in the s; her Art turned the tables artt allowed for women to be at the forefront of this fem expression revolution that occurred in the 70s. Whether or not an instance of erotic art ssex obscene depends on the standards of the jurisdiction and community in which it is displayed.

California established a three-tiered test to determine what was obscene—and thus not protected, versus what was srt erotic and thus protected by the First Amendment. Delivering the opinion of the court, Chief Justice Warren Burger wrote. The basic guidelines for the trier of fact must be: a whether 'the average person, applying contemporary community standards' would find that the ssex, taken as art whole, appeals to the prurient interest, arr whether the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by the applicable state law; and c whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.
